Ye of little faith

Bet you thought I stopped running. I didn't . . . for more than one day.

Tues 10/20/09 - no running.
Wed 10/21/09 - 21:55. About 3 miles. Ran in the morning before class.
Thurs 10/22/09 - 22:07. About 3 miles. Ran in the evening.

Don't feel terrible after 5 minutes of running anymore. Legs don't hurt either.

Another day back

23:26. I'm going to call this 3 miles.

Knee didn't hurt, except for a light twinge the last minute of running. I'm not going far or fast, but the body is getting acclimated . . . again. Hopefully, I'll stay consistent for longer this time.

It hurts when I laugh

21:50. Let's call that 3 miles.

I woke up feeling really sore today, which is really sad because what I did yesterday barely counts as running. My legs are sore and, somewhat surprisingly, my abs are sore too. Laughing is a tad painful. At about fourteen minutes into this run, my right knee bothered me. I should be careful to start running slowly for the first week or so.

I think I'm going to skip writing a week in review this week because, well, what's the point.

Week in Review: today's run plus four miles yesterday.

Seriously?

32:28. I'm going to say about 4 miles.

Why do I let myself get so out of shape? My lungs were feeling it at about 10 minutes into the run and I was not moving fast at all. The weather was appropriately fall-like with an overcast sky, drizzling rain, and cool winds. I once again wore my ancient purple and green hat with the word "Vermont" scrawled in cursive on the front.

Good to be back running, if only to get rid of the pudge that has developed under my chin.

Purchased a watch

I just went out and purchased a watch. I did this after realizing that the one that I ordered from Amazon was not coming. Don't ask. Maybe in a little while I'll be able to talk about it.

Anyway, I suspect this purchase means that tomorrow will be my first day of running in a long while.

How long? Look at the dates on the posts below.

Quick Update

So I still haven't purchased a new watch. I will start updating this blog once I do. I see this happening sometime in September.

Watchless running

About 6 miles. Time is a meaningless bourgeoisie concept. Also I don't have a working watch.

My watch died

About 9 miles. Couldn't time on account of my dead watch.

It was muggy outside.

2 days in this post

Today: 1:10:21. About 10 miles.
Yesterday: 1:10:53. About 10 miles.

Yesterday I saw two skinny, young turkeys and a deer. I saw only a dog today.

Week in Review

Total mileage: 34 miles in 5 runs.
Long run: none.
No workouts.

Took the weekend off.

What's wrong with the South?

50:19. About 7 miles.

My legs are really sore. The hills sure do a number on them.

In other news, here's an article on why "Southerners are Fat."

Getting there

1:02:06. About 8.5 miles.

Run was pretty good. No sunscreen in my eye. My shin began to hurt at 38 minutes and then again at fifty-something minutes, but was fine the rest of the run.

Sunblock in my eye

50:30. About 7 miles.

I think I slathered on too much sunblock today. Right away some dripped into my eye. With about ten minutes left it dripped into my other eye too. I was running with really red eyes and definitely looked like I was crying. Need to not put sunblock on my eyelids anymore. On the other hand, thankfully, at least my skin was protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Heavy downpour

33:10. About 4.5 miles.

It was raining heavily today. I decided to only run a little. Running on these small, curvy roads in the rain is a little scary.

To the moon

51:47. About 7 miles.

Happy moon day. Apparently it's been 40 years since we first walked on the moon. Awesome.

Week in Review

Total mileage: 39 miles in 6 runs.
Long run: none.
No workouts.

I didn't run yesterday (Sunday). I wanted to, but didn't get a chance to. This week was fine. I would have preferred to at least have run 40 miles, but this is alright too. My right shin and achilles are starting to flare up again.

Lazy Saturday morning run

50:31. About 7 miles.

Nothing much else to report. Today a tiny little dog was being walked by his owner. He saw me, started barking and ran straight at me. He got to the end of his leash and nearly fell over backwards. I love animals and don't like to see them get hurt, but this was hilarious.

Edit: Animals attacking joggers.

5 am didn't happen

29:49. About 4 miles.

Alarm went off at 5 am. I wound not getting out of the house until like 6:15 am for the run. Snuck in a quick little run. Still managed to be out the door, ready for the day by 7:30ish.

So the hat I'm running in is purple, while the front flap is green. In green cursive on the main purple part it has "Vermont" written on it. The top little button was chewed off by the family dog years ago. It's so beaten up and old and I look so weird running around in it. I love it.

Wearing hats and such

49:56. About 7 miles.

Today was a good run. Nothing exciting about it. I've started wearing a hat to protect my skin from the harsh sun. I remember always thinking people who wore hats while running were crazy, but now I'm one of them. Crazy.

Legs feel good after hills

51:57. About 7 miles.

I ran along Johnston drive and when I got to the bottom of the hill I explored the roads along Somerset Ave. They turned out to be not that good. Very few sidewalks and lots of road with many cars (I believe they're called highways). This is clearly not an area that is pedestrian friendly.

Then after some exploring, I tried to get back up the hill. The legs actually felt good while I was doing that. Well not good, but the quads didn't feel like they were going to pop, so I'm happy. Will this last? Who knows, but I'll take it today.

Slowly getting the hang of hilly terrain

51:26. About 7 miles.

I'm slowly getting better at running up hills. I still pant like crazy on some of the big ones though.

Monday, July 13, 2009

Getting into it

50:45. About 7 miles.

Starting to get used to the hills around here. I still slow to a crawl and breath really heavily on the big ones. Probably a combination of my general out of shapeness and the general largeness of the the hills. Are those words made up? Yes.

My watch is starting to act funky. When I change modes sometimes weird symbols show up. I think that this is the beginning of the end for the battery. You heard it here first.

Week in Review

Total mileage: 18 miles in 4 runs.
Long run: none.
No workouts.

Well, the less said about this week the better.

Sparse computer access

42:25. About 6 miles.

The hills were killer.

Eggs and Running

30:09. About 4 miles.

Nice little Saturday morning run. Came back and had eggs and toast.

Must get back on bandwagon

30:35. I'm going to say about 4 miles.

OK, so I didn't run the past couple of days. That's part of the reason that this blog is here. To shame me into not being so lazy. Everything was going so well the first month, then the legs started hurting. I took time off to let them mend, then I took time off because I was busy. Then I just took time off. Need to force myself to at least get outside, even if I'm not running that much.

Day Off

Didn't run today. Spent the day painting the house I grew up in. Pretty much doing that or something related to that the entire day. Just got home now, but can't run here because there are zero lights for miles around on the road that my parent's new house is on. Hopefully will get something tomorrow.

Quad burn

28:24. About 4 miles.

My stomach was bothering me so I turned back around fifteen minutes and made it back to the house in time to use the facilities. My quads are sore, in a good way, from all the hills around here.

Week in Review

Total mileage: 12 miles in 2 runs.
Long run: none.
No workouts.

This week was not that good, but everything is feeling better now. Can't feel the achilles problem and the shin feels good most of the time.

The Hills

41:44. About 6 miles.

My quads were aching from yesterday's hills and were still feeling it while running on those same hills today. When I get back to PA, maybe I should occasionally go on a run that's not pancake flat.

I saw two deer on the way out and one on the way back today. They were grazing and all moved a little away from me as I passed. Yesterday I saw a deer and three turkeys. The turkeys looked at me menacingly as I passed.
